Sten Joins Stampede From Across The Pond

The Stampede staff is excited to add goaltender Martin Sten from Huddinge Sweden to the mix for 2016-2017.  Sten, the 18 year old  from Huddinge Sweden spent last season with Flemingsbergs IK J18 Elite and J20 Elite impressed head coach Mike Beavis at the USHL / College showcase held in Norrtalje Sweden this spring.  "Honestly, I was not in Sweden looking for a goaltender but I couldn't help but to notice Martin as he stood out high above the rest in his play at the showcase.  I was not the only one that liked what I saw as Northern Michigan College assistant coach Rob Lehtinen and I spoke and he expressed to me "Mike, the kid is good, you really need to grab him !" At first I was hessitant but after speaking with Martin and his Mom (Monika) I left the showcase thinking that it might be a good fit." stated coach Beavis.  It was not long after that Beavis received word that Sten was very interested in the Stampede and Martin was offered a spot with the team for 2016-2017.

Sten, the 5'9' 155 lb tender is very quick and agile.  "Martin is a competitor that works very hard, he challeges his opponents and moves very well.  I watched him bounce back a couple times after goals and he responds well and stays composed.  He plays like a much older player in net." added Beavis  Sten is not the first Swedish goalie that Beavis has worked with as he has had Ludvig Kullen- Dansarie and Kristian Henriksson from Stockholm in the past.  "We have always had very good goaltenders from Sweden and I think we may have a another this season." states Beavis

The Stampede feel very good about the goaltending situation this season with the return of Ryan Scheide (Odessa TX), Sten and local rookies Steven Kozikoski (Liverpool, NY) and Mike Eastman (Verona, NY.)  "It will be great to see who jumps out as a possible number one for us this season, I know Scheide has been working hard in the off season and Koz I have known for years, he is a very good young tender, Eastman showed desire and stepped up at tryouts early this spring and earned a spot.  Sten is the unknown for me at this point but I have heard very good things about him.  I am excited to see who pushes who right from the get-go and very eager to work with all of them this season." states assistant coach Jason Lefevre.

The Stampede will begin training camp on August 29th at Morrisville State College and still have a couple spots left in their roster to fill going into camp.  The Stampede have been busy over the past several weeks and have recently signed quite a few players that will bolster their line-up for 2016-2017.  Interested players that are looking for possible opportunities to play for the Stampede are encouraged to contact Stampede head coach Mike Beavis at:  for more information on the Stampede and the NA3HL
